Letter from the Editor
By i.haveanidea
Welcome to another glorious edition of the StripeVine! First, I must apologize for the delay, but here is the new edition, so please enjoy it!
A lot of work went into this, so remember to check out the new sections : Design News! It should be really enjoyable, so give it a read! As well, you can now submit articles for 10 points (40 more if they get published) for member submissions, which will be added next week. We had a shortage of Ask Alejandro questions this week, and he figured he wouldn't answer until he got a lot, so send them in! I must also apologize on the amount of articles, as we're in the middle of revamping the StripeVine and it's staff, so next issue should be absolutely complete! To another issue of the StripeVine - cheers :)
FFX Updates
By i.haveanidea

There's been a lot of news in the past month as we've transitioned from Fringe to Fringe V2, and updates following that. Luckily, the StripeVine is here to keep you informed, just in case you've missed anything! In addition to that, you've obviously noticed that the StripeVine has changed since the 'old' Fringe. Apart from the amazing new layout by Ace`, we've also organized new article types, new staff, bigger interviews etc. We hope you enjoy, as this is all done for you, fellow reader!

We'll start with updates to the StripeVine (which you can see as you read through this edition). We've gone and pretty much wiped out most of the articles, but don't worry, their replacements should keep them happy. Instead of all those articles talking about the different sections of Fringe, we'll now have just 1 or 2, which focus on everything that's been going on since the last issue release, no matter the section or category! What about the rest of the articles? We now have some great articles focusing on design aspects of the world outside of Fringe! Whether this be professional artists, art galleries, photo manipulation software, we hope it will keep you entertained! Unfortunately, we also had to move around the writers that keep the 'Vine alive. Fortunately, by next issue, we'll have a whole new team of SVC, so look out! They'll be the ones writing the articles on the new StripeVine, so we really had to make sure they fit the slate!

Since we updated to V2, there has been a lot of exciting news! The day of the update, the winners for the competitions during that week were announced. Clyzm snagged the 61st SOTW (now known as TotW) with his freestyle entry, and congratulations!

Following the update, Amanda won the first 'TotW' with her great tag!

Our latest competition winner was Sythest, with his typography signature...

Kerby won the very last Premium Signature of the Week, as it was discontinued following the update, with his inspirational (not only in an artistic view, either) tag :

The update also lost AotW, Avatar of the Week, but while it was still on, Aenima won the last competition with his abstract avatar...

Marvel went away with the win at the 15th LaotF with his Freestyle Piece with a close win of 1 vote.

PotF #12 brought us two winners – Roxy and Pixel!

The CnC award was rewarded to Amada! Following the update, Roxy received the award, and just last week AznFX went away with the win. Remember, if you continue to post good critiques in both design sections you're sure to go away with an award eventually!

Congratulations to all our winners, and be sure to congratulate them if you see them in the forums!

There's also been some exciting news in the past few weeks, other than the competition winners. Unfortunately sign-ups are over for Fringe's Secret Santa, so you'll have to wait for next year if you didn't already sign up, but if you did, be sure to make your gift in time for the 25th - 30th of December!
If you weren't already aware, Secret Santa is an annual Fringe tradition. Any member can sign up, and they'll be assigned a member to make a gift for. Once Christmas comes, or any other holidays for those who don't celebrate Christmas, members give their recipient their gift. For more information, visit the <a href=”FringeFX Secret Santa Gift Exchange

Within the same week, Fringe released 2 all new resource packs! Both contain PSDs, C4Ds, and stocks! The November mini-pack can be bought for just 30 points (and trust me, it's worth it!), and can be bought in the FringeFX Mini Pack - November thread. However, the even larger pack, 'Prosperity' was released 6 days later. It's the third of the series of Fringe packs, following 'Inspire', and 'Creation'. This one is completely free for everyone, and it's just a click away to download!

Click the above image to visit the Prosperity Pack thread, or click these links to go straight to the downloads.
Creation, and Inspire

After a ton of work from Fringe staff and even a few members, the FringeFX School is now finished! Fringe schools bring a whole new experience of tutoring to the forums, and we hope it can achieve more than any other tutor program before it. Visit the Application Section to apply as a tutor, critiquer, or as a student. Becoming a student is absolutely free, so there's no harm in applying if you have anything you wish to learn! For more information regarding the new school system, check out the pinned topic, Welcome to FFX School

Artist Spotlight : Caravaggio
By i.haveanidea

Unbeknownst to artists at the time, Michelangelo Caravaggio would be a huge inspiration to modern art. During his life, though he was a popular artist, the Italian civilization at the time did not realize the future importance of his work. Despite his influential artwork, though alike many other famous artists, his life soon turned into a trainwreck following his prosperity. In 1608 he was accused of murder, then later that year was in another serious fight. After an attempt on his life, he died in 1609.

Following his death, Caravaggio lost much of his respect, and quickly lost his fame. His work was overlooked for a long time, until the 19th century, when it was rediscovered. His style, realism, was also re-invented in the 20th century. Even though he created art 400 years in the past, much of his art can be compared to modern day realism.

Caravaggio's style was a staple element to the modern art world - and not just for realism, either. His peticular lighting techniques developed into what are understanding of lighting is today.

You could any artist's work in some way derives from Caravaggio, whether it be their lighting, realism, use of everyday models, gloomy settings etc. His work is universal.

Have a good day Fringe, and enjoy the rest of the StripeVine!

Software & Hardware : The Insider
By i.haveanidea

It's that time of year again, for the 2010 software craze!

For our Photoshop users out there, Photoshop CS5 is on it's way, and is planned for release in April 2010. Among the new features will be a 'Warp' tool, and an upgraded Brush tool. The new Brush tool will allow more flexibility, and pretty much let you do anything with the brush, or 'paint', that you want! Adobe is also extending Photoshop for Mac 64-bit, however any Macs not running on Intel won't work with Photoshop.
You can check out the promotion video right here!

Lets face it though, what's going to go better with Mac Adobe Photoshop CS5's new Brush/Paint tool than an Apple Tablet Computer?
[Source : GraphicArtsMag]

The above is just an unofficial concept for the new Apple Tablet Computer, and not many details have been released at the moment, but there are some things we 'know'. It's probably going to be released around the same time as Photoshop CS5, in the Spring of 2010. It will be around 10" diameter, 0.5 inches thick, just over 1 pound. None of these are for sure, but these are the best estimate we have.

For the remainder of our community, a few program upgrades have come recently! Check out Inkscape 0.47 and Cinema 4D 11 for your vectoring and 3D needs!

Enjoy, Fringe!
